Hold Off on Sprinklers Just a Little Longer

Town of Frederick News Posted on March 23, 2026

Warm, dry weather has many of us thinking about turning on our sprinklers, but we’re asking everyone to hold off on using automatic or underground irrigation systems until early May.

Even though it feels like summer already, it’s still early in the season. Outdoor watering typically ramps up later in the spring, when water supplies, treatment processes, and system operations are fully transitioned out of winter mode. Starting automated, regular irrigation too soon can put unnecessary strain on the system and isn’t needed for normal lawns this time of year. There’s also a good chance we’ll see additional freeze events in the coming weeks. Turning on irrigation systems too early can increase the risk of damage to sprinkler lines and equipment.

What you can do right now: Hand water trees, shrubs, lawns, and gardens as needed using a hose. Focus on slow, deep watering to support plant health without overwatering.

You may notice some irrigation in parks and public spaces. This watering is limited to high-use areas, such as sports fields, to maintain safe, usable community spaces while conserving water overall.

We’re getting close to the regular irrigation season. Holding off just a little longer helps protect your irrigation system, supports healthy lawns, and helps us prepare for higher water demand in the months ahead.
