Rabies Advisory

Community Health Advisory

This is the third rabid skunk picked up in Weld County this year. Rabies is a fatal disease. Please take the precautions listed below to protect you, your family, and your animals.

Rabies Signs and Symptoms

• nocturnal animal out during the day

• slow-moving, dazed, or unusually tame

• stumbling or walking in circles

• extreme aggressiveness

Protect yourself and your family

• Do not feed, touch, or adopt wild animals.

• If bitten, immediately wash the area with soap and water, and seek medical care.

• Ensure all dogs, cats, horses, and mammalian livestock are up-to-date on rabies vaccine, administered by a licensed veterinarian.

• Keep a close eye on any new puppy or kitten, while it is outdoors, until it has received the rabies vaccine and for 28 days after.

• Tightly close garbage cans and feed bins, and never leave pet food outside, which may attract wild or stray animals to your home or yard.
