Frederick Power & Light is a municipally owned enterprise system providing Frederick customers with electric services within the original town boundaries since 1913.  On April 18, 2018, United Power, an electric cooperative utility headquartered in Brighton, Colorado, and the Town of Frederick jointly announced that they reached an agreement for the cooperative to purchase the Town of Frederick’s municipal electric utility, Frederick Power & Light. We will continue to provide updated information about the transition on this page.

Ballot question about the sale of electric utility

FREDERICK, Colorado (June 26, 2018) – The results are in regarding the sale of the town-owned electric utility to United Power, Inc. The election was required by Colorado State Statute 31-15-713 as the next step in the process of selling a municipal utility.

“SHALL THE TOWN OF FREDERICK BE PERMITTED TO SELL THE ELECTRIC LIGHT WORKS UTILITY TO UNITED POWER, INC. FOR A LUMP SUM PAYMENT OF EIGHTEEN MILLION DOLLARS ($18,000,000), AND WITH THE SALE TO CLOSE ON OR BEFORE JULY 1, 2019, WITH SUCH OTHER TERMS AND CONSIDERATIONS AS MAY BE AGREED TO BETWEEN THE TWO PARTIES?”

The judges processed 1,952 ballots. The Town of Frederick has 7,719 registered voters. The election results will not be official until July 6, 2018, in order to allow for the statute-required length of time for overseas military ballots and signature verification processes to be completed.
